The Work

It usually starts with a problem someone wants fixed.

A team that isn’t working. A project that won’t land. Sometimes the survival of the business.

Most leaders arrive with an explanation. It is rarely the whole story.

Part of the work is position. When you are in the thick of a situation, history, loyalties and pressure shape what can be seen. I have nothing to protect and no side to take.

Part of it is the filter. Every problem reaches me through the person carrying it: how they see it, what they have already concluded and what they need it to be.

The filter is not separate from the problem. It shapes which facts matter, which explanations hold and which possibilities stay out of view.

And part of it is nerve. Sometimes the problem is not hidden. People know what it is, but no one has said it aloud. My role is to say it plainly, so the person carrying it can act.

In practice

I pay attention to what is said, what is avoided and where the explanation no longer holds. That takes candid, unhurried conversation.

We meet regularly, in person or online, staying with the issue as understanding develops and its implications become clearer.

Sometimes the clearest way to understand what is happening is to see it first-hand. For a defined period, I can spend time inside the business: sitting in the room, talking with the people involved and observing how the place really runs. Inside or alongside, my position stays the same.

Where that leads will be particular to you.
