It usually starts with a problem someone wants fixed.

A team that isn't working. A project that won't land. Sometimes the survival of the business.

Part of the work is position. When you are in the thick of a situation, history, loyalties and pressure shape what can be seen. I come from outside that, with nothing to protect and no side to take.

Part of it is the filter. Every problem reaches me through the person carrying it: how they see it, what they have already concluded and what they need it to be.

The filter is not separate from the problem. It shapes which facts matter, which explanations hold and which possibilities stay out of view.

And part of it is nerve.

Sometimes the problem is not hidden. People know what it is, but no one has been able to put it plainly. My role is to put it plainly, so that everyone can see it.
